Clinical Study on Efficacy of Piroxicam in Mechanical Low Back Pain

Abstract
This study evaluated the clinical efficacy of Piroxicam in fifty patients with mechanical low back pain at Department of Orthopedic Surgery, Severance Hospital, Yonsei University College of Medicine.
All patients were treated with Piroxicam orally, initial daily dose of 40mg for two days; and subsequent daily dose of 20mg for five days or for the remainder of the treatment. The results obtained were as follows:
1. All clinical features which were followed indicated Piroxicam has significant antiinflammatory and analgesic effects in mechanical low back pain.
2. In 74% of the patients improvement was noted by the second day and 10% of the patientsW
by fifth day indicating a very rapid onset of pain relief. I 3. Piroxicam showed more remarkable improvement in acute low back pain rather than chronic cases.
4. Pain relief was closely related with severity of symptoms, more apparent improvement in severe and moderate cases rather mild patients.
5. No close relationship between effectiveness and age has been found.
6. The features showed better improvement, marked improvement of one case and moderate improvement of two cases. when combined with physiotherapy for three most severe cases, accompained with nerve root entrapment.
7. Piroxicam was well tolerated in most of the cases. In two cases treatment was discontinued because of side effects, one case of gastric irritation and the other of puffiness of face.
In conclusion, Piroxicam appears to be a safe and effective therapeutic agent in moderate and severe mechanical low back pain and is expected to offer important clinical advantages of antiinflammatory and analgesic effects in the treatment of low back pain.
